The Kenai River is not just where the largest salmon are found, it's also the most affordable destination due to it's proximity to Anchorage and the major road access points for fishing Alaska on today's tightened budgets.

Dipnetting On Kenai Red Hot

July 16, 2010

Dipnetting for reds at the mouth of the Kenai River has really picked up as of Friday and the crowds are already showing up at the mouth of the Kenai River. Lots of boats and most everyone reporting excellent luck as of Friday PM. Expect the crowds to be there in force this weekend as it looks like the fish are showing on time and in good numbers. Reports are that Mondays commercial opening went very well and the numbers were much higher then expected; possibly setting records. See the photos from Friday on the Kenai

Better Late Then Never

July 08, 2010

Many of the local rivers are seeing a late resurgence in the King Salmon run that had failed to materialize as predicted earlier this summer. The Deshka, Little Su and the tributaries of the Big Su are seeing a late run of King Salmon enter these rivers. Fishing restrictions are being lifted and anglers are finally seeing some action in these streams. Still, for all to many, the season was a real bust. Many of the people we sent out fishing had to return without fishing due to closed waters, or came back empty handed due to the restrictions on the fishing at that time. There trips became real expensive in a hurry as their is no refunds on their travel expenses or fishing licenses.

We try to explain that these things can happen. But, when it's you “Fishing Trip of a Lifetime”, that just doesn't seem to matter to them too awful much. I still wonder, what the heck is going on for the fishing to be so off like this? For thirty years it was very predictable, then all the sudden you can't predict a thing. Makes it hard to spend the hard cold cash on that “Once In A Lifetime Fishing Trip to Alaska”.

Alaska Fishing Forecast Worse Then Gloomy for 2010

June 11, 2010

The 2010 Alaska fishing season is looking to follow the same pattern as last year in the fact there will be fewer anglers vying for the diminishing returns of salmon to the rivers and streams near Anchorage. Fishing all across the state is feeling the pressure as the ailing economy has put the dampers upon many Alaska fishing vacation plans for another season. And now that the 2010 season is here, another shot has been placed in the hearts of all the dying sportfishing anglers living and traveling to Alaska in 2010.

Where are all the salmon? First the Theodore, Lewis, and Chuitna rivers in the West Cook Inlet were closed to King salmon and then restrictions were placed on the Anchor River, Deep Creek and Ninilchik River just before more restrictions on area rivers like Deshka River and the prized Kenai was shut down for King fishing soon followed reduced limits on the Yentna River and Nushagak & Mulchatna rivers in Bristol Bay. This list just keeps growing making us wonder, has ADF&G really been doing their jobs? If so, then where the heck have all the salmon gone?

Just one look at the 2010 Alaska fishing regulations makes it very clear that they are not worth the paper their written on. Look at the web site and if you know what you need to know you will read over the massive list of Emergency Orders restricting or outright closing sportfishing all across Alaska. Now I ask again, where have all the salmon gone? Will salmon fishing go down like the steamer clams that were commercially harvested throughout Kachemak Bay? That already is a “I Remember When” event of long ago. That reminds we of when there use to be crabs and shrimp there too. Where has all the sportfishing gone?

I sure would like to be a little bird and listen to the stories that circulate the sportsmen's circles about the “Once Great Fishing to be found in Alaska”. Stories from this season are not really what we need if tourism is to continue to include Alaska Salmon Fishing in it's repository of offerings for summer vacations. Maybe we could sell them on a tour of the commercial salmon fishing, that is if it can survive the current management practices of Alaska's Fish and Game Dept.

2010 Alaska Fishing Forecast

April 21, 2010

But if your still planning on coming to Alaska in 2010, you can consider yourself more then just lucky, you are about to be treated to one of the most unimaginable fishing trips on planet earth.

Why do I say this? Simply because it's true. Fewer anglers means negotiating affordable rates from guides as well as for your lodging. Add this savings to the limit fishing pressure and your in for a real great trip.

Areas like the Kenai River, Little Susitna River and Ship Creek will still see their fair number of anglers in 2010 but nothing like in the more distant past. Taking this into account, you can expect the experience to be more of the tranquil one where the fishing pressure is predicted to be moderate.

Forecast Down For 2010 Fishing Season.

On the down side is the size of the run forecasted for 2010. As we all remember, 2009 was a year of small numbers of returning salmon to the waters of Cook Inlet. From the once mighty Kenai River all the way up to the northern rivers in the Matanuska Valley, fishing was spotty and emergency closures were common. For 2010, this scenario may be a lot worse if the forecasts from Alaska Fish and Game are correct. Let's take a look at the numbers and you will see what I mean.

Starting this off we will look at the Susitna River which includes it's tributaries of Alexander Creek, Deshka, Talachulitna, Skwentna, and the Yentna River as well as some other lesser known areas off the main river system. The forecasted return for these areas is 542,000 fish, down 41% from the 20 year average return of 913,000 fish. Last years return was labeled as a disaster when forecast was for 669,000 fish. The actual return was much lower prompting closures during the normal fishing season.

The anticipated sockeye salmon returns for 2010 to the secondary streams of Upper Cook Inlet is looking much better then the forecast for the Kenai River. Numbers are predicting increases to area streams with Fish Creek expected to see 142,000 fish, 2 percent more than the 20-year average run of 139,000 sockeyes, and Crescent River forecast for 148,000 salmon, 47 percent greater than its 20-year average run of 101,000. Crescent River is located on the west side of Cook Inlet across from Kasiloff near Tuxedni Bay.
