Ship Creek Salmon fishing in Anchorage

In the shadow of a brilliant city of lights is a jewel of a salmon fishing stream. Ship creek produces a great number of beautiful king and silver salmon each year and is home to the annual Ship Creek Salmon Fishing Derby held every summer.

Access to the stream is from Ship Creek Avenue between downtown Anchorage and the Air Force Base. The creek parallels the rail road tracks from the boat launch up through the air base. Salmon fishing is only permitted from the mouth to a point 100 feet below the Chugach Power Plant dam, marked by a cable stretched across the stream. Be sure to check the current Alaska fishing regulations for season openings and any special bulletins.

Handicapped access for fishing Ship Creek in the railroad industrial area of downtown Anchorage is available from the raised wooden platform behind the Comfort Inn on Ship Creek Avenue.

Where to go fishing in Anchorage Alaska!

Ship creek is the best known stream in the Anchorage Bowl but there are others. The many lakes in the city are available for fishing with Jewel lake being the most popular of the bunch. Delong and Cheney are also popular lakes for trout fishing.

Bird Creek produces some very good salmon fishing from it's banks about 20 miles south of town on the Seward Highway.

Campbell Creek in south Anchorage is another popular fishing stream but be sure to read the current regulations before fishing. This creek has excellent access from the many greenbelts and bike paths along it's shores. Campbell Creek has a Kid's only , 16 and under, King salmon fishing weekend that takes place on the last weekend of June each year. Campbell Creek is stocked annually with rainbow trout and silver salmon. There is also a native population of dolly varden in the creek.

Great runs of Silver and King salmon return to this stream every year. Fly outs available to some remote rivers and streams.
