The best time to visit Anchorage Alaska is whenever you have an inkling to get away from it all. Summer, Winter, Spring and fall all have some exciting opportunities for anyone venturing into the heart of Alaska.

Springtime in Anchorage sees the transition from a snow covered playground to a lush green wonderland filled with wildlife, birds and long lines at the local car washes. Folks are getting out more now that the days are getting longer and people are just gleaming at the thought of a summer returning to their last frontier.

Anchorage Summers are full of tours and activities that make this time especially popular with visitors to Alaska. The Ship Creek Fishing Derby attracts local anglers and visitors alike while the souvenir shops in downtown Anchorage are busy filling orders from excited patrons looking for mementos from their visit to Alaska. The streets are abuzz with tour busses heading out to places like Denali and Fairbanks while the train station is busy with passengers in route to their cruise ship in Seward or Whittier.

Winter in Anchorage is when you find such events as the Renaissance Fair, Anchorage Fur Rendezvous Festival, the Championship Iditarod Sled Dog Race and the longest snowmobile race in the world, the Irondog. Skiers also flock to Anchorage in the winters to take part in one of four popular forms of skiing: Cross country, downhill alpine skiing, heli-skiing and backcountry skiing, telemark skiing have all been popularized by movie makers like Warren Miller and ESPN Sports.

Fall in Alaska brings in the hunters looking to fill their tags at many of the hunting lodges throughout Alaska. This is also the time when the northern lights begin to light up the skies again whispering the end to another fantastic Alaskan summer. Blueberry pickers are heading to the hillsides to gather the fruits before the first heavy frost and photographers and artists are witnessing in the colors of fall foliage and storing them on their films and canvases.

Every season gives good reason to visit Anchorage, so choosing the one best time to visit is completely up to the desires of the individuals. Having lived in this northern wonderland for 30 years I would be hard pressed to choose just one time as the perfect time to be here.
