The major airports inside Anchorage include the State-owned Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and Lake Hood Float Plane Base, the Municipality owned Merrill Field, and U.S. Army and Air Force facilities. The Port of Anchorage handles 85% of the general cargo for the Alaska Railbelt area. There are five terminal berths, with 3,488 linear feet available. Several barge and trucking companies are available. The Alaska Railroad connects Anchorage to Seward, Whittier and Fairbanks. Best Way To Get Around in Anchorage AK.If you are staying in downtown Anchorage, you can get to most places simply by walking. Anchorage has an inexpensive public transportation system that operates quite well called People Mover. This is a public bus system that gets used quite heavily during the summer months at least in the main tourist areas of Downtown Anchorage. Upon their first visit to Anchorage, many people are rather surprised that parking in this northern city is very limited in the downtown area and what parking is available can be very expensive. We advise folks visiting only the downtown areas that renting a car is often not advisable to using taxis or the public transportation system.
