Kenai Peninsula Travel AdvisoryEnforcement Stepped Up in Kenai
For 2009. Alaska Travel Advisory; Across Alaska, law enforcement
will be busy this summer. Speeding is expected to be the #1 offense
this summer followed by drunk driving, (DUI).
Memorial Day Driving in Alaska.May 22, 2009 Thousands of Alaskans will trek to the Kenai Peninsula over Memorial Day to test their luck in the waters of the Kenai, Kasilof, Anchor and Ninilchik rivers as well as Deep Creek. As fun as this may sound, the spotlight may end up being on your wallet if the state and local law enforcement have their way. Many traffic laws, law enforcement practices, and municipal courts are more about generating revenue than they are about traffic safety. During holidays like the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, fiscally challenged municipalities are particularly motivated to enforce minor traffic laws to help bolster local revenues. This year, the Kenai Peninsula will be one of the hot spots again this Memorial Day Weekend issuing significantly more tickets in to boost their declining city and borough revenues. Cities have added part time officers to their payrolls and will be putting more patrol cars out to catch those breaking any of the laws including “click it or ticket”, cell phone texting, illegal parking, crossing yellow lines, and of course, speeding and drunk driving, (DUI). Speed traps will be present across the state manned by Alaska State Troopers and local law enforcement officers so keep the speed down or prepare to be fined. Also note that many areas have double fines so any infractions could get spendy really quick. The Kenai Peninsula has just finished adding on to their courthouse in Kenai and is in need of patrons to help justify this major expense. Already stating that an increase in officers will be present through the summer, Kenai has also added more patrol officers for the local beaches and the troopers will be in an ever present posture on the rivers looking for any violations again this year. It is not exactly a well-kept secret that many traffic laws, enforcement practices, and local court system are more about boosting dwindling revenues as well as for some ill conceived political motivations, than they are about traffic or personal safety so all we can say is beware when on the roads this weekend.
